Location
The Kanha National Park is located in the Mandala District
of the state Madhya Pradesh, in the central India.
An Overview
Kanha National Park is one of the well known tiger reserves
in
India,
where one can spot tigers in the broad day light in their
natural habitat. The park consists of a total area of 1945
sq. km. out of which 940 sq-km is its core area. It was
declared as a sanctuary in the year 1933 and gained the
status as a National Park in the year 1955. The sanctuary
came under the Project Tiger Scheme in the year 1976. Its
rich flora and fauna attract wildlife enthusiasts from all
parts of the world.
Climate & Ideal Time to Visit
The park experiences an extreme climate with hot summers and
cold winters. During summers the maximum temperature goes up
to 43 degrees C and during winters (November-January) the
minimum temperature drops down to 11 degrees C. The park
receives an average annual rainfall of 152 cm in monsoon
(June-September). The park is closed during monsoon and the
best time to visit is in winters, between November and
January.
Wildlife Attractions
» Flora - The park has a moist deciduous and dry
deciduous forest types with Sal as the major tree species.
» Fauna - The park has about 22 species of mammals
including tiger, leopard, hare, langur, bear, jackal, wild
dog, bison, hyena and four horned antelope, which are easily
spotted.

» Avi-fauna - The park houses around 200 species of
birds. The major avian species includes the egret, heron,
peafowl, eagle, hawk, flycatcher, pigeon, parakeet,
kingfisher, grey hornbill, woodpecker etc.
Activities
The park provides facilities for jungle safaris including
elephant and jeep safari. Safaris deep inside the forest of
the park offers a wonderful chance to explore its wide
variety of wildlife.
Accommodation
There are a number of forest rest houses and resorts at
Khatia, Kisli and Mukki offering excellent accommodation
options. The Jungle Lodge of Kanha, the Royal Tiger Resort
at Mukki also cater the needs of tourists coming to explore
the park.

that reflects the tribal culture of the state of Madhya
Pradesh.
» Elephant Safari - An elephant safari within the
park offers the best opportunity to observe tigers and other
wildlife in a close quarter.

The Park is well connected by air, rail and roads.
» Air - The nearest airport is at Nagpur at a
distance of 266 km, which is connected to Delhi and Mumbai.
» Rail - Jabalpur Railway Station (169km) is the
nearest one and is connected to all the major cities of
India.
» Road - Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation
(MPSRTC) has regular bus services to the park. Some major
road distances are : Jabalpur(175km), Khajuraho(445km),
Nagpur(266km) and Raipur(219km).
