Location
The national capital of In dia,
Delhi is located on the west bank of the river Yamuna. It is
surrounded by Haryana on three sides and across the river Yamuna
to the east by Uttar Pradesh.
The City Delhi
Delhi, the national capital is the administrative centre of
modern India. It has a significant place in the history of
India. Both during the rule of Mughals and British, it was the
centre of power. In the year 1950, it was made the capital of
Independent India and in 1992 became a state of Indian union.
The city is divided into two distinct part : the Old and the New
Delhi representing traditional and modern life. Several
historical monuments and shopping complex are major attractions
for the tourists.

» Red Fort - Popularly known as the Lal Quila, it is one of
the popular hunting place among tourists in Delhi. This
magnificent red sandstone structure was built by the Mughal
ruler Shah Jahan. The Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate are the two
entrances to the fort. The fort complex houses a number of
palaces and other buildings inside it. It is the place where
Prime Minister address on independence day every year.
» Jama Masque
-Located
near the Red Fort, this beautiful mosque was built by the Mughal
emperor Shahjahan and is the largest mosque in India. Its an
excellent example of Mughal architecture with a 408 sq. ft.
courtyard and three gateways. There are two 130 feet high
minarets which offer spectacular views of the city. Its also the
major Muslim pilgrimage centre for Hindus
» Qutub Minar
It is located at Aurobinda Marg, New Mehrauli road, 14 km from
the shopping place Cannaught Place. This five storied building
is the highest stone tower in India and an excellent example of
Indo-Islamic architecture. Its construction was started by the
first muslim ruler Qutubuddin Aibak in 1200 AD and later
completed by his son in law Iltutmish in the year 1368.

» Jantar Mantar
This is one of the five observatories built by Maharaja Sawai
Singh II of Jaipur. It was built to observe the movements of
stars.
» India Gate
It was built in the memory of honour of 70,000 Indian
soldiers killed in the World War I. It was designed by Sir Edwin
Lutyens and completed in 1931. It also houses an eternal flame
in the memory of Indian soldiers killed in the 1971 war with
Pakistan. It also hosts the parade of nation's Republic Day.
Humayun's Tomb
Humayun's tomb is a complex of buildings of Mughal architecture
located in Nizamuddin East, New Delhi. It encompasses the main
tomb of the Emperor Humayun as well as numerous others,
including the Barber's Tomb.
Lotus Temple
One of the most beautiful temples in India, the 40 m high Bahai
Temple is also known as Lotus Temple as it is built in the shape
of a half-opened Lotus flower. Completed in 1986, this pure
white marble temple is also known as Taj of Modern India
Laxminarayan Temple

temple built in honor of the Hindu goddess of wealth, Laxmi, and
of her consort, Lord Vishnu
Akshardham Temple
Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi epitomises 10,000 years of

and bliss. It brilliantly showcases the essence of India’s

Other Attractions
Other prominent tourist places in the city include the,
Rashtrapati Bhawan (Parliament House), Raj Ghat, the Akshardham
Temple, the ISCON Temple etc.
Climate
The city has extreme climates, hot during summer months
(May-June) and cold during winters. The average temperature
ranges from 25-46 degrees C during summer and 2-5 degrees C
during winters. During the months of February to April and
August to November is the ideal time to visit the city. It
experiences a little amount of rain during July and September.
Fairs and Festivals
People from all the states migrate to Delhi and it became a
multicultural state. Delhi celebrates almost the same fairs and
festivals as the celebrated in other parts of India. Some of the
important fairs and festivals celebrated here are : Lohri,
Republic Day, Qutub Festival of Classical Dance and Music, Mango
Festival, Dussehra, Holi, Garden Tourism Festival etc.
Shopping
Shopping in Delhi will be a delightful experience for you.
From the medieval period it is one of the major trading centre
in North India. Several markets of Delhi provide a wide choice
of items like carpets, jewellery, leather, handicrafts and
leather items. Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk,
Janpath, Sarojini Nagar, INA market are some of the principal
shopping places.
Transportation
As the capital of India, the city is well connected to all
major parts of India and world by air, rail and road.
» Air - The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and
the Domestic Airport at Palam are the two major terminals in the
city. All the major international carriers have direct services
to Delhi.
» Rail - The New Delhi, the Old Delhi and the Hazrat
Nizamuddin are three major railheads in the city. These are
connected to the major cities and towns of India by several
Express trains.
» Road - The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) provides
bus services to all the major destinations in North India. There
are three Interstate Bus Terminus(ISBT) at Kashmere Gate, Anand
Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan from where buses are available to the
neighboring states.
» Commutation - City buses, taxis, auto rickshaws, cycle
rickshaws are available from all the bus terminals, railway
stations, airports to all parts of Delhi. Also one can take the
newly lunched Metro Rail for traveling inside the city. |
